The Eagles gave their home crowd plenty to cheer about.
Making their first appearance of the season at Roy Davis Field, the Eagles jumped on the Delton Kellogg Panthers early and never looked back, rolling to a convincing 42-7 victory.
The win moves Schoolcraft to 2-0 on the season.
The Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard after taking the opening kickoff. Schoolcraft marched down the field on its opening possession before Darien Phillips found a hole up the middle and powered his way into the end zone from five yards out. Evans added the extra point to put the Eagles ahead 7-0.
Schoolcraft’s defense then came up with a big play, intercepting a Delton Kellogg pass and giving the Eagles another opportunity to add to their lead.
They took advantage.
With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Jack DeVries connected with Brandon Weaver on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Evans’ extra point made it 14-0.
The Panthers finally answered in the second quarter, scoring on a pass from No. 10 to No. 44. The successful extra point cut the Schoolcraft lead to 14-7.
That score didn’t stay on the board for long.
Saxton Abfall took the ensuing kickoff and turned on the speed, racing 90 yards for a touchdown and sending the Eagles’ sideline and home crowd into a frenzy. Evans’ extra point pushed the lead to 21-7.
The Eagles continued to find the end zone.
After a Delton Kellogg punt gave Schoolcraft possession at the Panthers’ 40-yard line, Beckett Boyes took the ball around the corner and found the end zone. Schoolcraft successfully converted the extra point on a pass from Jack DeVries to Landon DeVries, making it 29-7.
The Eagles weren’t finished before halftime.
After forcing another Delton Kellogg punt, Schoolcraft needed just two plays to strike again. DeVries found Abfall for a 33-yard touchdown pass, and Evans drilled the extra point through the uprights.
With three minutes left in the first half, Schoolcraft had opened up a commanding 36-7 advantage.
The Panthers received the opening kickoff of the second half but couldn’t get anything going and were forced to punt. Schoolcraft moved the ball to the Delton Kellogg 42-yard line before the Panthers’ defense stopped the Eagles on fourth-and-nine, turning the ball over on downs.
Delton Kellogg took possession at its own 16-yard line, but the Eagles’ defense continued to keep the Panthers bottled up.
Schoolcraft added another touchdown late in the third quarter when Boyes powered his way through the Delton Kellogg defense from 12 yards out. Boyes refused to go down, dragging defenders with him as he crossed the goal line.
The extra point attempt was missed, leaving the Eagles with a 42-7 lead with one minute remaining in the third quarter.
Schoolcraft’s defense and running game took care of the rest.
The Eagles did turn the ball over on a fumble during a third-and-15 situation in the fourth quarter, giving Delton Kellogg possession at the Panthers’ 35-yard line. The Panthers were unable to capitalize, however, as the Eagles closed out the night with a 35-point victory.
From the opening drive to the final whistle, Schoolcraft controlled the game on both sides of the ball. The Eagles had a total of 410 yards of total offense to the Panthers 142 yards of total offense.
The Eagles’ home opener couldn’t have gone much better.
