By Marilyn Jones, Schoolcraft’s Poet Laureate

I went to a Senior Girl’s Tea
They had lovely refreshments,
A nice program … and me.
They seem to enjoy a poem or two
Sometimes I pick an old one,
Or write a verse, brand new.
The girls are so young and pretty
Three of them sat with me,
All of them, friendly and witty.
Long, sexy dresses are now quite bare
A few years ago Moms would say,
“You aren’t wearing that! Don’t you dare!”
Our Ladies Library is a historic place
It’s been cared for, over many years,
Once, girls wore high-button shoes
And high-necked dresses with lace.
Bare legs are showing, with slit to the hip
Front and back is on display for all,
Someone should give designers a tip.
I remember when knees had to take cover
Girdles made girls’ tummies flat,
Times change—there’s nothing we can do about that.
In a few years, they will have kids of their own
Their turn to drop a startled jaw,
As they mutter, “There ought to be a law.”
Laugh and say, “Have a good time”
Yes, things continue to change,
A good subject for another rhyme.
So girls, live your lives
Along the way, have some fun,
We all admire the great job you’ve done.
