By Marilyn Jones, Schoolcraft’s Poet Laureate
I bought a hummingbird feeder
And hung it out on my porch one day,
To entice them with some sugar water
And hoped they would fly my way.
Many hours are spent on my glider
Right now, I was reading a book,
I hadn’t seen any birds there yet
You have to be quick, but I happened to look.
And there he was, with a pretty red throat
Happy to find some lunch right here,
He slurped it up with his straw-like beak
I sat very still, it had nothing to fear.
He flapped his tiny wings so fast
They quivered in a blur,
It excited me to observe nature
And this unique happening to occur.
Wasn’t it clever of that little bird
To find it and hover, mid-air?
I was in awe of God’s little critter
Until it pooped on my chair!
