Annual Walk for Poor set for September 28

by | Sep 2025 | Community

The Walk for the Poor event gives back to people in need.

St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Martin of Tours church in Vicksburg and St. Edwards Church in Mendon are sponsoring the fifth annual Walk for the Poor at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 28 at the Vicksburg Recreational Area and Trail.

All are welcome to participate and help raise money for people in need. The trail will be marked for distances and the distance walked is set by each participant.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a group of volunteers from St. Martin and St. Edwards Catholic churches. It is part of a worldwide community of lay Catholic Christians who join together to grow spiritually by offering services to neighbors in need. St. Vincent de Paul members work in conjunction with other churches and agencies, such as South County Community Services, to assist struggling families.

This past year the funds raised at last year’s Walk for the Poor were put towards assisting approximately 200 families with essential needs such as housing and utility payments. The efforts have prevented evictions, kept homes warm during harsh Michigan winters, and provided for families navigating economic challenges. Each dollar donated goes directly to those in need, ensuring the impact is felt right here in Vicksburg and surrounding areas.

Community involvement is the backbone of the Walk for the Poor’s success. Local businesses and individual donors come together to support the cause. By walking, donating, or just spreading the word, everyone can help this event succeed. Please consider participating or donating to this most worthwhile event.

On September 28,, participants should meet at 12538 S Sprinkle Road Vicksburg Recreational Area and Trail. On-site registration begins at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 1:30 p.m., with every step contributing to the fight against poverty. For more information, please call St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church at (269) 649-1629 ext. 3 and leave a message.
