Recently I had the chance to speak with Chris Dick, one of our newest board members at South County Community Services. We talked about SCCS and his experience so far on the Board. He joined us at the beginning of 2025, along with Katie Grossman and Mehran Nayeem. Our conversation is below:
We’ll start with an easy one: What kinds of things do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy learning about history – World War II and the founding era of the United States are my favorite areas to study. I enjoy all aspects of chess – playing, watching, studying, collecting, etc. I stumble around on the tennis court a bit, as well.
What made you interested in joining the board at SCCS?
I became familiar with SCCS and its work through its frequent partnership with my church (Lakeland Reformed). I was impressed with the impact it has on the community. [Editor’s note: Lakeland Reformed Church has been a great partner for us over the years! They adopt our families for holiday gift giving over the holidays and help us out with big financial assists that we are unable to handle on our own.]
How have you enjoyed it so far?
Very much so. It has been a privilege.
How do you envision South County Community Services’ role in the community?
I see it as the first stop when someone in our service area needs help and doesn’t know where to turn. If SCCS can’t help directly (which it usually can), then we can likely direct clients toward other available resources.
What kinds of things does the Board do, and how should someone go about joining if they are interested?
We meet monthly to discuss financials and upcoming activities. When available, board members assist with special events like the Senior and Family Christmas parties and the Backpack Bonanza. I encourage anyone who is interested in joining to contact Drew or a board member.
Thank you so much for doing this, Chris! It has been great having you on the Board this year and we look forward to many more!
Before I sign off, a plug for the food pantry: We are struggling to keep up with demand lately and could use some donations. Please see our ad to find our wish list for donations. We can take any food that non-perishable and not expired!
