As we introduce and launch a refreshed and improved website, I reflect on the many changes in the newspaper business over the decades. Years ago, small towns had newspaper offices, and the editors and staff were familiar faces. Today, many small towns have lost their community papers, and with that comes a loss of connection.
All of us with the South County News now work remotely. In fact, I finished working on this edition at a cabin in Ontario using my phone as a hotspot. I never imagined this would be possible!
I received a few comments about last month’s It’s a Fine Life column about milkweed. My friend Warren said he remembered collecting pods for the war effort and said he remembered how sticky the floss was when the pod was opened. Subscriber John indicated I forgot to mention the importance of milkweed for the monarch butterfly life cycle. Very true! There is an effort to create pollinator gardens that include milkweed. Thanks for the reminder!
