A Thanksgiving surprise

by | Nov 2025 | Community

It was a dark and cold morning in 1947
With snowflakes, drifting down from Heaven.
We were up early that Thanksgiving morn
Grateful for the day our baby son had been born.

We were going to my in-laws’ house for dinner
Grandma Jones was a wonderful cook,
Hours ago, the turkey and dressing went in the oven
Her homemade noodles were No. 1 in my book!

There would be delicious pies and rolls
With salads and veggies in bowls.
We bundled into our little old coupe
Traffic was light, we made it OK
On arrival, aromas were enticing that day.

Dinner was always ready by noon
Larry was propped in his dad’s wooden high chair,
I helped put food on the table
Until someone yelled, “Hurry … Look! Look!”

Here came a dogsled, running down the road
Eight husky dogs were racing very fast,
The driver was standing on his big sled
We were all laughing as they flew past.

Never again, in all my years;
I haven’t seen a sight like that, ever!
I can still remember it clearly
A dogsled running on the highway?
NO, NEVER!
