The Southwestern Athletic Conference meet between the Comets and the Eagles went down in the Eagles’ house. The ladies, 5-1, faced off first against the Comets, 4-2. The first two periods belonged to the visitors with strong defense and steady shooting from the paint and beyond the arc. The Comets ended the half with a 34-19 lead.
The visitors still led at the end of the 3rd period, 51-29, holding the Eagles with little chance to put the ball into the net. They had held the Eagles to 10 while adding 17. At the final buzzer, the Comets came out on top, 63-34.
Val DeVries was the Eagles top scorer for the night putting up 19, while the Comets Elli VanDusen knocked down 23.
The boys faced off in the second game with the Eagles coming in at 6-3, the Comets 4-3.
At the end of the first period, the Eagles held a slight advantage at 11-10, but during the second, the Comets outscored the Eagles and hit the locker room in the lead at 23-9. By the end of period 3, the Eagles had regained the lead, 36-33. With 2 minutes left to play, the Comets were up, 47-45. The Eagles came back with 1 minute left with a breakaway layup by Kode Bienze, the score at 47.
Still tied at 7 seconds left, the Eagles turned over the ball, the Comets missed a shot, and the game headed into overtime, setting the game clock at 4 minutes.
With 40 seconds left, the Comets were up 56-53. Ty Goddard hit a clutch 3 pointer to tie the game, 56-56, and as the Comets inbounded the ball, Kode Bienze was called for a foul as he intercepted the ball. The Comets made both free throws, and Schoolcraft’s Jimmy Miller scored a layup, knotting the score at 58.
An interception and a buzzer beating 3 by the Comets gave them the win, 61-58. Jimmy Miller had 27 for the Eagles and for the Comets, Crosby Croel had 22, along with the buzzer-beating game-winner 3-point shot.
