Defining Standards is No Simple Task

By Travis Smola

The standards in which Schoolcraft students must show proficiency for each subject and grade level are difficult to explain simply. The standard is what the student is expected to learn, but there are different ones for each subject and grade level. Each one has different expectations for students.

They are also difficult to define because as Director of Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Matt McCullough notes, they are still a work in progress. He said their teams will be working to refine what is important for Schoolcraft’s own brand of standards over the course of the 2016-17 school year.

McCullough said most important in determining the standards will be making sure they help students successfully transition from grade level to grade level. It’s also important the courses align with what is expected by college and careers.
