Girl Scouts from troop 80826 in Schoolcraft used money earned from this year’s cookie sales to buy wood and paint from Big C Lumber in Schoolcraft to build a bench for the soccer team during its matches.

“We were talking at one of our troop meetings and brainstorming ideas on community service projects and what did the girls think our community may need,” said their leader, Nikki Hulinek. “Some of the girls play soccer in the K-8 soccer league and realized that there is not much seating for the high school soccer team. The younger teams play on the same field that the older kids play on, just at different days and times.”

That led to conversations with Lori Freer, who is the current treasurer for the Schoolcraft Soccer Club, at one of the Saturday morning games for the K-8th graders. She said that the high school soccer team could use a bench as the one they have currently doesn’t hold the whole team.

To build the benches, they used a power screwdriver and the help of one dad to put together precut pieces of wood to form the bench. Once the bench was put together, the girls picked out the color of paint and painted the bench themselves. The bench is currently at the Schoolcraft soccer field across from Schoolcraft Elementary School.
