The Lions Club will be holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Burch Park at 11 a.m. April 19. The event is open to any Schoolcraft child between 1 and 9.
Since its start in 1917, Lions Club International has grown into one of the largest service organizations in the world, with over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. Its motto, “We Serve,” underscores the Lions’ dedication to making a positive impact on their communities.
The Schoolcraft chapter, set up 1985, raises funds for its community through over 400 breakfasts at its annual Pancake Breakfast on July 4, selling Turkey Raffle tickets at Thanksgiving, as well as its annual White Cane fundraiser.
All proceeds stay local and are used to fund many of the club’s services such as the egg hunt, the development of service dogs, helping local people in financial need with eyeglasses or hearing aids, and sponsorship of the Schoolcraft Schools’ Robotics Club. For many years it has been the charter organization for the Schoolcraft Boy Scout Troup 250. The club’s good works also extend to accepting used eyeglasses at collection boxes at KCSB, Harding’s and other places around Schoolcraft, teaming up to wash windows of all the apartments at Cedar Park as well as building raised-bed gardens for the residents’ use. They have also spent time cleaning headstones in the local cemetery.
The Lions are always looking for civic-minded members. In addition to community service activities, the club offers the opportunity of being with civic-minded folks and enjoying fellowship, informational meetings, and an opportunity to support the community. Regular meetings are held January through May, and September through November at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the American Legion in Schoolcraft.
